We are a non profit to help raise money for families of ill children with expenses that are non-reimbursable by health insurance.
In May 2013, we discovered a lump on our son's leg. After an ultrasound, multiple MRI's and a biopsy, they diagnosed him as having a rare form of cancer, a myxoid mesenchymal tumor. Because there have only been 10 other documented cases in world, and in multiple cases it did not react to chemotherapy, they decided to remove it without shrinking it first. On July 8th, Dawkins, 8 months old, underwent surgery to remove the tumor.
During that time of diagnosis, surgery, recovery, and then follow-up MRIs, we had many visits to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. While we were at the hospital we noticed an unfullfilled financial need for many families. Insurance doesn't cover everything.
Items that aren't covered can add up: Parking, Food, Gas to and from the hospital or testing sites, childcare for your other children, time taken from work, and the list goes on and on...
